Tex, underground is a constant temperature. Below 5-10 feet, the ground maintains a constant 55 degrees F in the mid-Atlantic at least. Anything underground will be at that minimum.

Have you ever stayed in there for any length of time? Human body heat can turn the place into an oven without air cooling. It is very good to shelter underground in the cold for that reason but in really cold temperatures the air you have to bring in to breathe can be far below zero and that will start to show in only a few minutes of ventilation running.

This makes the underground fantastic for a root cellar but a different situation when it is inhabited by one or more people.

Aye, so install a preheater or radiator on the intake. One could even use this cold air as means to cooling the power plant similar to a heater core in an engine. If you cannot warm that air up, youre f'd. That cold air will sink into the shelter.

I spend hours in confined spaces. I know what you're talking about. I just think excess heat will be more of an issue than hypothermia.

There were a lot of survivalists using cogeneration for their generator setups in the shelter inside sealed, waterproofed rooms. I think their hot water and power was coming from the generator and they also did cooling this way. Wish I could find more information on this approach ... it's littered throughout the 70's but the specifics are nowhere to be found. If you see something that actually details how this was done I'd like to see it, should still be out there.

And my kitty eats your mice! Lol but a practical pet will take care of pests. I used to have a spider problem (like 2 inches across house spiders) but since my cat joined the house, I haven't seen a cricket, spider, or mouse.

Have to train that cat to use the same toilet as everybody else. :)

P.S. I think a cat could be quite good for morale if you properly housetrained it.

Its funny how pets keep us grounded. Thanks for posting on all the dangers that can befall one's shelter. I'm limiting things to family mostly. I'd like to create a focal point with plants and full spectrum lights. Having an area with bright lights, running water, and living plants should be a big morale boost not to mention the excess oxygen.

Yes, the high ammonia urine is an issue. I need to figure out a buffer system for that. Id like to build a grey water system with an aquaculture component. Tilapia are really tolerant.
